WhatsApp Releases Desktop App For Windows And Mac


WhatsApp, the massively popular smartphone messaging app owned by Facebook Inc., is now available in a familiar place: your computer’s desktop,on Tuesday launched desktop apps for Windows and Mac. The new apps are available for download via the company's site and are compatible with devices running Windows 8, and devices running Mac OS 10.9 and above.

Announcing the launch of the Windows and Mac OS X, the company posted screenshots and a statement for users saying: "Today we're introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere – whether on your phone or computer at home or work. Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device."

By landing on Macs and PCs, WhatsApp is now present on every major OS, including Apple’s iOS, Alphabet Inc. ’s Android, BlackBerry and Windows phone—and even in Web browsers. A fully cross-platform messaging service with more than 1 billion users world-wide could pose a threat to competitors, especially Apple’s iMessage and Microsoft’s Skype.

WhatsApp desktop apps, just like the Web client, require users to scan a QR code using the using the WhatsApp app on the smartphone. On the smartphone, users will have to look for WhatsApp Web menu under Settings. Users will have to make sure they are running the latest version of WhatsApp on Android, Windows Phone, or BlackBerry.

Desktop app is only available for PCs and notebooks that have versions of Windows 8 and above. As for Mac, it is only available for those having OS X 10.9 and above.
